The Plaque is Still Homeless, but Safe

Since the time that we had bills stuck in committee, that would have given the plaque a place of prominence by the capitol, most of our allies in the legislature have found other work, and the 2023 majority seems to be spending more time maligning individual rights than celebrating them.

The plaque is in a safe place, but there is a need to make a new box, and mount it onto a new trailer for display purposes. These were never intended to be permanent, and have deteriorated over the decades. If you can help, please contact Scotty Boman at ScottyEducation@yahoo.com (that’s me) and I will pass your contact information onto the keeper of the plaque.

Likewise, contact me if you believe you know some sympathetic legislators that would be willing to offer us a pathway to put it on long-term display on capital grounds, or the Michigan Historical Museum, please contact me.

Forty First District State Representative Martin Howrylak has introduced a new bill to get the Brass Roots Plaque displayed in it’s rightful home on the grounds of the State Capital Building. You may Contact your State Representative and ask him or her to cosponsor or support HB 4240 at: house.mi.gov … and you may also encourage your state senator to introduce or support a Senate version of HB 4240 at: senate.mi.gov However, the most immediate action that must be made is to move this bill out of committee.  To do that there needs to be a committee hearing.  Bradford Jacobsen is the Chair of the Government Operations Committee. So it is urgent that he schedules a hearing. Please contact anyone you know who may be in the 46th State Representative District, and ask them to call Representative Jacobsen at 517-373-1798 ( 855-737-2723 toll free) or email him using at: BradJacobsen@house.mi.gov

Other Committee Members Must Be Contacted Too! If you are in any of these districts please contact your representative and urge him or her to have a committee hearing for this bill.  If you know anyone in one of these districts, urge your friend to do likewise.

HB 5595 (2014) Update

While Scotty Boman and Mary Buzuma were attending the legislative action day on December 10th, Committee Chairman Wayne Schmidt informed them that a vote on HB 5595 would not be on the Transportation and Infrastructure’s agenda this session.  That’s the bad news.

The good news is that State Representative Martin Howrylak and State Senator Mike Green have been reelected, so the plaque may still find it’s home in 2015.  Martin Howrylak was the author of HB 5595 and he expressed a willingness to introduce this legislation early in 2015 session.  Senator Mike Green remains ready to introduce identical legislation, or follow up on the house version in 2015.

Please remember to thank the office holders who have been supportive of our efforts.

Have a Happy New Year!

Legislative Action Day December 10th

The administrator of this blog, Scotty Boman, will be holding a legislative action day Wednesday December 10th.  Tentatively, he should arrive by the capital between 10:30 AM and 11:00 AM.  The exact location will probably be infront of the legislative office building:

Anderson House Office Building
124 North Capitol , Lansing, MI

More details will be posted, but anyone who may be interested should call Scotty Boman at: (313) 247-2052 or email him at: scottyboman@hotmail.com

Melt The Switchboards Monday!

[Note:  We all get passionate at times, but please temper passion with a positive attitude and civility.  It is better to hold back and get desirable results, then to vent frustration and fail.]

The Brass Roots Plaque had it’s hearing before the election.  However, the hearing only permitted testimony.  A vote was not taken on getting HB 5595 out of committee.  There is a meeting of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure this Tuesday, but unfortunately HB 5595 is not currently on the agenda.  To his credit, Committee Chair Wayne Schmidt put the testimony on the agenda before, perhaps he can be persuaded

The Brass Roots Plaque

Spent shell casings were collected, melted down and made into a plaque commemorating the rally and casting in brass the Second Amendment to the US Constitution and Article I, Section 6 of the Michigan Constitution — alongside a 3-dimensional Statue of Liberty relief, created by famed, Michigan sculptor, Edward Chesney.

to add it to the agenda to be voted on.

Please call, email, and fax Wayne Schmidt to urge him to place HB 5595 on the December second agenda, and get everyone you know to do the same!  Schmidt was just elected to the State Senate to represent the 37th district, so calls from constituents in either the 104th State House district, or the 37th State Senate district will be especially effective.  All legislators are primarily accountable to people who live in their districts, so if you know sympathetic constituents in any committee member districts, please urge them to join our effort.

Also, it is important that your representative supports this when it comes to the floor.  Call your representative and your state senator!

Naturally, anyone who can show up in person Monday or Tuesday should do it.

There are only three weeks left in the 2014 legislative session.  If we don’t get this passed in the next three weeks, then the entire process must be restarted in 2015 assuming the bill is even reintroduced. There will be a legislative action day on December 10th, and it would be nice to have this bill in play by then.

Finally, while you are speaking to committee members, you may also ask them to support HB 5867.  This is an unrelated bill, other than the fact that it’s author is Martin Howrylak who also authored HB 5595.  While it is not normally good practice to support a bill because you like a different bill by the same legislator, HB 5867 is a common sense bill that would recognize people who must use motorized or manual wheelchairs as pedestrians rather than motorists.

PLEASE CHECK BACK FOR UPDATES, AND MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR DECEMBER 10TH!
